LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan schools Superintendent Michael Rice is urging lawmakers to tighten regulations on the rules for what would qualify as in-person instruction time.
Rice says the changes are needed to meet the state’s 180-day mandate for a school year and says an erosion in actual teaching time is having a negative effect on national test scores in Michigan.
The state’s marks in fourth grade reading fell to 32nd in the country last year after being 21st in 2022.
Fourth grade math test results improved in 2024, rising to 18th in the country compared to 22nd in 2022.
Rice is a former Kalamazoo Public Schools superintendent.
